Pre & Postoperative Instructions

If you have had a tooth extracted, there are a few important things to remember for both the preoperative and postoperative stages.

Preoperative Instructions

Illness

If you become ill before your appointment, let us know in case we feel the need to postpone your procedure.

Food

Do not drink any alcoholic beverage 48 hours before your appointment, as alcohol may cause excessive bleeding!

Dr. Gengo will give you more information about proper preoperative instructions before your procedure.

Postoperative Instructions

After you have gone through dental surgery, there are some important steps to take:

  • After your surgery rest for around 6-12 hours. This allows your body to have time to heal. Excessive exercise or movement can cause your incision to open and bleeding to occur.
  • A moist gauze has been placed on the surgical site, make sure you replace the gauze every 15-20 minutes and replace with a new piece of moist gauze until bleeding has stopped. If bleeding persists for more than an hour, contact Dr. Gengo immediately.
  • A soft diet is recommended for at least a week after you have had your surgery. Avoid eating anything crunchy or that has seeds.
  • Do not rinse your mouth with mouth wash on the day you had your surgery. Do not brush over the surgical area until after your first post surgical exam.
  • Do not smoke while you are in the healing stage. Smoking will cause the healing process to slow down and cause less than optimal results.

Dr. Gengo will discuss with you in more detail about proper postoperative care before your procedure.
